What is stretch woven fabric ?

by Jessica Prebble 22 Aug 2024 0 Comments

Stretch woven fabric is a type of textile that combines the characteristics of woven fabrics with the added benefit of stretch, usually achieved by incorporating elastic fibers like spandex (also known as elastane or Lycra). This type of fabric offers both the structure of a woven fabric and the flexibility of a stretch fabric, making it highly versatile and suitable for various applications, including lingerie, sportswear, and everyday clothing.

Key Characteristics of Stretch Woven Fabric:

  1. Woven Structure:

    • Tightly Interlaced Threads: Woven fabrics are made by interlacing two sets of yarns or threads (the warp and the weft) at right angles to each other. This creates a stable and structured fabric that generally has less stretch compared to knit fabrics.
    • Durability: The woven construction makes these fabrics durable and less prone to pilling, with a more tailored appearance compared to knits.
  2. Incorporation of Stretch:

    • Elastic Fibers: Stretch woven fabrics typically include a small percentage of elastic fibers, such as spandex, blended with the primary fibers like cotton, polyester, or nylon. This allows the fabric to stretch in one or more directions.
    • Multi-Directional Stretch: Depending on the weave and the amount of spandex used, the fabric can have either two-way stretch (stretching along the warp or weft) or four-way stretch (stretching in both directions). This flexibility enhances comfort and fit.
  3. Benefits in Lingerie and Apparel:

    • Comfort: The stretch in the fabric allows it to move with the body, providing greater comfort, especially in form-fitting garments like lingerie, activewear, and tailored clothing.
    • Fit and Flexibility: Stretch woven fabrics conform better to the body’s shape, offering a more precise fit that can accommodate a range of body movements without losing its form or structure.
    • Enhanced Shape Retention: These fabrics return to their original shape after being stretched, which helps maintain the garment's fit and appearance over time.
  4. Applications in Lingerie:

    • Bras: Stretch woven fabrics can be used in the construction of bra bands, side panels, or even cups, providing a snug but flexible fit that offers both support and comfort.
    • Shapewear: In shapewear, stretch woven fabrics help create a smoothing effect while still allowing for movement and breathability.
    • Panties and Other Garments: These fabrics are also ideal for panties, bodysuits, and slips, where both structure and flexibility are desired.
  5. Advantages Over Non-Stretch Wovens:

    • Better Range of Motion: Unlike traditional woven fabrics, which can feel restrictive, stretch woven fabrics allow for a greater range of motion, making them suitable for activewear and garments that need to move with the wearer.
    • Less Restriction, More Comfort: The stretch provides added comfort without compromising the tailored look and feel that woven fabrics are known for.

Best of both worlds!

Stretch woven fabric offers the best of both worlds: the structured, durable qualities of woven fabric combined with the flexibility and comfort of stretch materials. This makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of garments, including lingerie, where both fit and comfort are paramount. Whether used in bras, shapewear, or other types of lingerie, stretch woven fabrics help create pieces that are both supportive and comfortable, while still maintaining a sleek and polished appearance.
